Pros : Stylish looks and a quality camera. Cons : Underwhelming specs. Verdict : The Nokia Lumia 925 is a good handset with a great camera but slightly disappointing specs.
Nokia Lumia 925 Full ReviewThe Nokia Lumia 925 is an odd little phone. Essentially it’s just a minor update to the Nokia Lumia 920, doing little more than improving the build quality. That’s not such a bad thing as the Nokia Lumia 920 is already a good handset, but it does leave the Nokia Lumia 925 feeling a bit like a stopgap in the run up to the Lumia 920’s proper successor- the Nokia Lumia 1020. Design The Nokia Lumia 925 probably looks the least like a Lumia out of any phone in the range. The general size and shape fit the profile and at 129 x 70.6 x 8.5mm it’s quite a small and slim phone, with little space going to waste, but the build quality and colour choices are different to other Lumia’s. Rather than being totally covered in plastic, the Nokia Lumia 925 mixes things up with a metal frame. It’s a good design choice, giving the handset a high end, premium look. Colours meanwhile are more understated this time round. The bright and potentially garish shades are gone and replaced with a black, white or grey finish. Some people may miss the distinctive colours of other Lumia’s and it’s a shame that metal was used so sparingly but all in all it’s a good looking handset. Performance With a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM the Nokia Lumia 925 isn’t exactly a top flight performer. In its defence, Windows Phone 8 runs more smoothly on low end hardware than Android, so specs aren’t as important, but even so the Nokia Lumia 925 noticeably struggles from time to time, with delays not uncommon when launching apps. It’s by no means a poor performer, but it doesn’t feel as high end as it should either. Thankfully the inclusion of 4G ensures that things are a lot faster and slicker when web browsing or doing other data hungry things, though it’s not necessarily any better than any other 4G equipped device. Display The Nokia Lumia 925 has a 4.5 inch 768 x 1280 AMOLED display with a pixel density of 332 pixels per inch. It also uses ClearBlack PureMotion HD+ technology, which helps minimise reflections, increase sunlight visibility and improve the contrast of the screen. It’s a good screen all in all, but it’s out done by high end Android handsets like the LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy S4, both of which have bigger and higher resolution screens. Camera The camera is the star of the show on the Nokia Lumia 925, as is the case with so many other Lumia handsets. It’s only 8 megapixels, but it uses a high quality Carl Zeiss lens and features a dual-LED flash and optical image stabilisation to minimise camera shake and prevent images from coming out blurry. That also makes it great for low light photography, outshining most other phones in that area. It can also shoot 1080p video at 30fps and there’s a secondary 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. While the Nokia Lumia 1020 has topped it, the Nokia Lumia 925 still has one of the best smartphone cameras around and serves as proof that megapixels aren’t everything. Other features The Nokia Lumia 925 has a 2000 mAh battery which can manage up to 440 hours of standby time, up to 12 hours and 40 minutes of talk time (with 3G on) or up to 55 hours of music playback. However if you do a lot of web browsing, watch a lot of videos or play a lot of games it will struggle to last a day. The Lumia 925 has 16GB of built in storage (or 32GB if bought through Vodafone) and there’s no micro SD card slot. It supports Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G LTE, NFC and Bluetooth 3.0. Conclusion The Nokia Lumia 925 is a great phone with a premium build a very good camera and high end features such as 4G. It’s a little disappointing in some ways, particularly its performance as it could really do with more RAM. It also doesn’t offer much that isn’t available for less money on the Nokia Lumia 920, but it’s still a very good phone in its own right and while it wouldn’t be worth upgrading from a Lumia 920 to this, the Lumia 925 is the better buy if you don’t already own either. It’s also reasonably priced, coming in at around £350 SIM free.
