O2 is continuing its mission to cover the UK with 4G connectivity, with the Somerset villages of Crewkerne and Ilminster as well as Northumberland’s Swarland set to join the network’s roster.

As reported by the Western Gazette, 4G will be arriving in Crewkerne and Ilminster some time over the coming months. With both towns said to be struggling for a decent signal, O2’s additional assurance of better 3G performance will also be welcome.

“We can’t be more specific on timings at this stage but we will keep everyone updated,” said an O2 spokesman.

There’s similarly good news for O2 customers further north, where work to bring 4G to Swarland has begun. Once again, O2 will be improving 2G and 3G performance as part of the 4G works, but customers should note that they may experience an intermittent service while these works take place.

In such instances there’s always the free O2 TU Go app, which enables customers to make and receive regular phone calls over Wi-Fi.

“O2 customers in Swarland will soon be able to experience faster mobile internet on their devices such as streaming high-definition TV, shopping on the go, and video calling,” Derek McManus, chief operating officer at Telefónica UK, told the Northumberland Gazette.

“For our business customers, 4G is all about working more effectively. They can work remotely, access cloud services, collaborate using apps and so on. 4G will make everything easier for them.”

O2 currently offers 4G connectivity in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the UK, and is spending £600 million on network improvements this year alone. While its 4G coverage of 70 percent of the UK population is far from the most extensive, O2 is the only UK network to have made a regulatory commitment to providing indoor coverage for 98 percent of the UK population by the end of 2017.
