O2 Volt: everything you need to know

1st May 2025

Volt

If you’re a customer of either O2 or Virgin Media, or are considering signing up, then Volt is worth knowing about, because it gives you major extra perks for having both an O2 plan and a Virgin Media broadband plan.

Below, we’ll cover exactly what benefits you can get, and how you sign up for Volt in the first place.

What is Volt?

Volt is a service offered by Virgin Media and O2, which rewards you for signing up for both. Specifically, you need to have both an eligible O2 Pay Monthly phone, tablet, or SIM plan, and an eligible Virgin Media pack or bundle. If you already have one of these, then you can get Volt by signing up for the other.

Once done, you’ll be eligible for various benefits on both the mobile and broadband side, which we’ve detailed below.

What O2 mobile benefits do I get with Volt?

With Volt, you’ll get double data on all the eligible O2 Pay Monthly plans in your household – so if you have multiple plans on your account, they’ll all benefit from this.

More specifically, you’ll get double data on plans of under 250GB. For plans of 250GB and over, your data will instead be boosted to unlimited. The doubled data won’t roll over though, and obviously if you have a plan with unlimited data, this won’t benefit from a boost.

You’ll also be able to roam for free in 75 global destinations (rather than just O2’s standard EU roaming) on every eligible plan in the account holders name, though it’s worth noting that this perk is available on some plans without Volt anyway.

What Virgin Media broadband benefits do I get with Volt?

As well as the O2 perks above, your Virgin Mobile broadband will also get some upgrades. For one thing, you’ll get a speed boost to the next available level (up to 1Gbps) – though obviously this won’t help if your plan already includes the highest available speeds.

Additionally, you’ll get a Wi-Fi guarantee, which means that if you’re not getting Wi-Fi speeds of at least 30Mbps in every room, Virgin Media will supply you with up to three Wi-Fi Pods to boost performance, and if that doesn’t do the trick then you’ll receive £100 in credit.

How do I get Volt?

To get Volt you simply need to sign up for an eligible O2 Pay Monthly phone, tablet, or SIM plan, and an eligible Virgin Media broadband plan. The only plans that aren’t eligible are Virgin Media Essential broadband plans and O2 Essential plans.

If you already have either an eligible O2 or Virgin Media plan, then you simply need to sign up for the other to access Volt.

Note that you can also get access to Volt if at least one person in your household has an eligible O2 plan and you have Virgin Media broadband registered at the same address.

Your Volt benefits should automatically be applied within 14 days, as long as the addresses on your Virgin Media and O2 accounts are the same.

However, if they don’t match up or if the accounts are in different names, you can edit your details on your online accounts. Also, if you were already a customer of both companies before 18th October 2021, then you’ll have to head to either My O2  or My Virgin Media to activate Volt.

What happens if I change or cancel my plan?

If you upgrade or change your plan then you may lose the Volt benefits for up to 14 days, but assuming you’re still on an eligible plan they will automatically be reapplied.

If you leave O2 altogether then you’ll lose your double mobile data (obviously, since you won’t have an O2 plan), but you’ll get to keep your boosted broadband speeds. Similarly, if you leave Virgin Media, you’ll obviously lose your broadband speed boost, but you’ll get to keep your double O2 data.
