O2 has boosted 4G in over 91,000 postcodes

29th June 2020

O2 Network Mast

O2 might be marching ahead with its 5G network, but it hasn’t forgotten about 4G. In fact, it’s just announced that since the start of 2020 it has boosted its 4G coverage in over 91,000 postcodes across the UK.

That includes 323 tourist hotspots / points of interest, as well as connecting 67 other points of interest to 4G for the first time.

And this focus on tourist attractions is no accident, as with the UK starting to open up again, and many tourist attractions being back in business from July 4th, now is the ideal time to make sure that visitors, holidaymakers and businesses have the connectivity they need to stay in touch and online, especially as not many people are likely to travel abroad for a while, meaning it could be a big summer for UK holidays.

In total, O2 has now brought 4G coverage to over 18,000 regional towns, villages and hamlets, including the likes of Inveruglas on the shore of Loch Lomond, and Cynheidre in South Wales, as well as attractions like Cat and Fiddle road in the Peak District, Machrihanish Beach on the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland, and numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites.

Brendan O’Reilly, Chief Technology Officer at O2 said: “It has never been more important for people to keep connected. We have a collective responsibility to help rebuild our nation, and the telecoms industry stands at the forefront of this effort. With the government signalling a return of tourism in the coming days and weeks, we want to make it easy for people to enjoy summer safely. All with the knowledge that they can venture to pockets of the countryside and still keep in touch with friends and family.”

There's 5G too

While 4G is the focus of this announcement, O2’s 5G service also continues to improve and will provide an even bigger boost to areas lucky enough to have it.

Following an announcement that 60 towns and cities in total now have O2 5G, the network has said that this includes outdoor coverage at 334 points of interest, including Covent Garden in London, and the Jewry Wall ruins in Leicester.

So there’s never been a better time to travel and holiday in the UK as an O2 customer, and with travel abroad still tricky that’s good to know.

But rural coverage is set to get even better soon, as O2, EE, Three and Vodafone will all work together to bring 95% combined 4G coverage across the whole of the UK by the end of 2025, through the government’s new Shared Rural Network scheme.
