Vodafone’s 4G service is growing steadily and the company is doing all it can to attract customers. Talking about the extra speed is all well and good, but Vodafone decided that it wanted to really bring the benefits of 4G to life and with that in mind it’s created an augmented reality 4G cityscape, which it’s taking on tour.

What exactly is an augmented reality 4G cityscape? We hear you ask. Well, essentially Vodafone has built a large 3D model of a city and loaded it up with augmented reality features, so that when you move a Sony Xperia Tablet Z over the scenery it comes to life on the tablet screen.

It’s achieved this by adding markers to the model, which are recognised by the tablets camera and transformed into moving images. As users move around the city they’ll see content which highlights the benefits of 4G, along with the Spotify and Sky Sports Mobile TV content that customers can receive.

To get a better taste for it, check out this video that Vodafone have put together :

The cityscape has already made its way to the Westfield Shopping centre in London and the Trafford Centre in Manchester, but if you missed it at those locations you can still see it in action at the Sheffield Meadowhall between Friday the 15th and Sunday the 17th of November or at the Birmingham Bull Ring between Friday the 22nd and Sunday the 24th of November and there are more locations yet to be announced, so if you can’t make it to any of them you may find it turns up in a city closer to home.

Helen Cullen, one of the people behind the project, said that “The use of AR combined with physical objects is pioneering stuff. At 2.5m long, the 4G cityscape is both complex and challenging, but we’ve been able to create realistic looking vehicles and people to really bring the city itself to life. It’s pretty ambitious, but we think it does a great job of bringing 4G to life.”

The team behind the augmented reality cityscape reckons it’s one of the largest AR experiences ever done, so it’s well worth checking out if you get a chance.
