Vodafone 4G Escalates At An Impressive Rate

Vodafone launched its 4G mobile network in London on 28th August this year. At the time we here at 4G thought this was pretty lame yet we are beginning to realise that Vodafone does mean business.

During September Vodafone launched 4G in Birmingham, Coventry, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield. Further, Vodafone will be launching 4G in Liverpool on 17 October, in Glasgow on 24 October and in Manchester a week later.

Vodafone aim to bring 4G to 98% of the UK population sometime in 2014. This is certainly impressive and even though Vodafone launched 4G 10 months after EE it is by no means impossible that Vodafone could reach the same level of 4G coverage as EE sometime in 2014.

Vodafone has also confirmed that it signed up 100,000 people to its Red 4G Ready plans in around 6 weeks. We recall that EE acquired 500K 4G customers within 6 months of launch and hit 1 million three months later.

Vodafone say its 4G network is around 6 times faster than a standard 3G network and they claim to have impressive indoor and outdoor 4G coverage which is no doubt helped by holding 4G frequency spectrum in both the 800 MHz and 2.6Ghz bands.

Looking at the above figures and research we previously covered, which predicts that up to 10 million people in the UK will take out a 4G contract within the next 12 months, then you see why both Vodafone and EE are moving as fast as humanly possible to roll out their respective 4G mobile networks.
