Samsung Galaxy S4 with Superfast 4G

5th April 2013

EE are currently the only 4G network in the UK, so when they announce that they’ll be the only network to launch a given handset with 4G it’s not really saying much. Nevertheless if you’re looking at investing in a 4G handset it’s worth knowing what’s out there, so EE’s updates on new 4G handsets are still useful - even if we could do without them emphasising that they’re the only UK network to offer it (because again, that’s a given for the time being).

Samsung Galaxy S4 4G

However one of their most recent ‘exclusives’ is actually quite exciting, because it’s a 4G version of the biggest smartphone of the year so far - specifically the Samsung Galaxy S4. We haven’t reviewed it yet but let’s be clear- this thing is a beast. With a 1.9 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 5 inch 441 ppi screen, a 13 megapixel camera and up to 64 GB of storage (with even more available if you add a micro SD card) it’s got some of the best features we’ve ever seen. The only thing we’ve noticed about it so far that’s not quite world class is the build, which in typical Samsung style is mostly plastic, though it’s still not a bad looking phone at all.

The handset is currently up for pre order on 4GEE, with 24 month plans starting at £41 a month. That will get you unlimited minutes and texts along with 1GB of data - plus you’ll have to put £79.99 towards the handset itself. If you want more data than that then there’s a range of other plans available, right up to a £76 a month plan which gets you 20GB of data - along with the same unlimited calls and texts and a cheaper £19.99 upfront fee for the handset. It’s not cheap however you look at it, but 4G is the future and right now it’s one that EE has a monopoly on. We can only hope that prices will go down once they have some competition.

You can pre order the Samsung Galaxy S4 with EE either online, in store or over the phone and the company claim that with 4GEE on the Samsung Galaxy S4 you’ll be able to “watch live TV on the move without buffering, play live multiplayer games on the go and download large email attachments quicker than ever.” Though we can’t help but think that most of that sounds like it will eat up a lot of data, rendering the cheaper plans all but useless if you plan to be doing a lot of those sorts of things.

Intriguingly EE have also promised an “exclusive incentive” for new and existing customers who order the handset before launch, though there’s no word yet on what that might be.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 launches on 4GEE on the 26th of April. You’ll also be able to buy it on other networks from that date - though obviously without 4G, for the time being at any rate.
