Enter the Apple Watch

10th September 2014

Apple-iWatchIt's too bad that we have to wait until early next year to get our hands on the smartwatch!

Apple were seemingly not content unveiling two new iPhone 6 models at their press event yesterday because they also showcased their much anticipated smartwatch, now known as the Apple Watch.

The smartwatch is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus running the latest version of iOS 8 and supports both WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Apart from telling the time the Apple Watch can send and receive messages, answer calls to your iPhone,  pay for items in store, control your Apple TV, act as a board pass for a plane, monitor your workout and much more.

Apple have developed an iOS-based user interface created specifically for the smartwatch. The new interface is controlled using a combination of  the innovative new Digital Crown, that enables you to scroll, zoom and navigate without obscuring the display, and a Retina display with Force Touch which can tell the difference between a touch and a tap. Along with the Taptic Engine and built-in speaker that together enable a new vocabulary of alerts and notifications you can both hear and feel.

There will be two different sizes of the Apple Watch (38mm and 42mm) in three different collections, which are the standard Apple Watch (polished or space black stainless steel case), the more durable and fitness orientated Apple Watch Sport (space gray or silver anodized aluminum case) and the Apple Watch Edition (18-karat rose or yellow gold case).

As if that wasn't enough choice already there will also be a variety of different straps to choose from including: the high-performance elastomer Sport Band; the Milanese Loop in a flexible magnetic stainless steel mesh; the Leather Loop in soft, quilted leather that conceals magnets for quick fastening and adjustment; the leather Modern Buckle, which closes with a solid metal clasp; the leather Classic Buckle; and the stainless steel Link Bracelet.

But the personalisation doesn't end their because the software itself will let you choose between 11 different clock faces. We love the Apple Watch and are very impressed with what we've seen of the user-interface and by Apple's acknowledgement that being an individual matters, especially when it comes to jewelry and fashion.

The Apple iWatch will be available to buy early next year with prices confirmed to be starting at $349 (~£215). Precise specs and full pricing information are yet to be made available.
