Sony Xperia M2 – 4G Phone

Sony Xperia M2 packs 4G powerSony Xperia M2 – joins the list of mid-range 4G phones

One thing we’ve never felt the right to expect from mid range phones is good looks, so Sony’s announcement that the Xperia M2 is the slimmest 4G phone in its class is, in some ways, something to be happy about.

On the other hand it’s not really saying much, as there are certainly slimmer smartphones around and presumably there are slimmer mid range smartphones too, just not ones with 4G. Still, at just 8.6mm thick the Xperia M2 is a slim handset and it looks good for it.

Beyond its 4G credentials and slim build you can expect a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM, making it reasonably powerful.

It also has a large 4.8 inch 540 x 960 LCD display with a pixel density of 229 pixels per inch, which while not top of the range is sharp enough to comfortably use.

Its camera comes in at 8 megapixels and includes Sony’s Exmor RS mobile imaging sensor and 1080p video recording capabilities, so you can get some decent pictures and videos out of it. Plus its got some of Sony’s most popular camera features, such as Timeshift burst, which captures 31 images in a mere 2 seconds, allowing you to find the perfect one.z

The Xperia M2 has Android 4.3 out of the box but it should soon be upgradeable to Android 4.4.2, bringing it right up to date.

Onboard storage is limited to 8GB, but that’s bulked up by the inclusion of a microSD card slot.

The Xperia M2 also has NFC, which among other things lets it easily connect to Sony’s wireless SBH20 Stereo Bluetooth headset, for a slick and wire-free audio experience.

The handset is going to be available in purple, black and white when it releases on the 16th of May, but it’s available to pre order now, for a price of around £240 SIM free.

Sony has managed to create a mid-range phone that maintains a premium feel. It’s old Android and the camera has a low pixel count but you still get a quad core processor and a great battery. On paper it looks good but the killer blow will come when Sony announce a price.
