Sony Xperia M
However on the surface it looks a lot like any other Lumia, with a plastic back (that comes in a choice of white, black, red or yellow). The main physical difference is the camera, which is a lot bigger this time around and contained in a raised black circle on the back.
It’s plastic as you might expect, but it has a slim build of 124 x 62 x 9.3mm and doesn’t look bad. Plus it has the same metal power button as higher end Xperia handsets, which gives it a bit of style.
The Sony Xperia M has a 4 inch 480 x 854 TFT display with a pixel density of 245 pixels per inch, which for a mid-range phone isn’t bad at all.
It has a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. That’s not great but it generally runs without a hitch and again it’s not bad for the money.
It has just 4GB of built in storage, which really is next to nothing. However it also has a micro SD card slot with support for cards of up to 32GB, so you don’t have to be limited by the onboard storage.
The Sony Xperia M has a 5 megapixel camera along with a physical shutter button and an LED flash. It can also shoot 720p video at 30fps and has a VGA quality front facing camera. Photo quality is fairly comparable to other 5 megapixel snappers, which is to say not great but good enough to view on the phones screen or stick on a social network.
The Sony Xperia M has a 1750 mAh battery which Sony promises can manage up to 454 hours of standby time on 3G or up to 9 hours of 3G talk time. It supports 3G, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC.
Sony Xperia M Release Date & Price
The Sony Xperia M is out now and available SIM free in black, white, purple or yellow from around £175. That puts it roughly in line with the Nokia Lumia 620 and Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, which makes sense since it’s similarly mid-range.
On a 24 month 3G contract the Sony Xperia M is available with no upfront cost from around £13 per month on Vodafone, from £17 per month on O2 or from £23 per month of Three.
It doesn’t support 4G LTE, so you’re limited to 3G plans and currently none of the major networks sell it direct, so you’ll have to get it through a middle man such as Carphone Warehouse.
