4G has been seen for the first time in Ireland as Vodafone demo its 4G mobile technology to the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte. This follows the successful conclusion of the 4G auction in Ireland.
The successful 4G auction winners were Vodafone, Three, Meteor and O2. Vodafone secured four chunks of 4G spectrum in the 800MHZ, 900MHZ and the 1800MHz bands. More on the 4G auction here.
Vodafone have been first “off the blocks” to fire-up its 4G network and aim to launch 4G across Ireland around June 2013. Meanwhile, Pat Rabbitte became the first person in Ireland to use a 4G phone and a 4G mobile network.
4G will offer Irish consumers download speeds up to five times faster than offered on 3G and upload speeds of two times faster. Over the next few years, 4G Advanced ( LTE-Advanced ) will offer download speeds of ten times that of 3G.
An introductory video of the 4G services Vodafone Ireland will be offering its customers can be seen above.
