O2 is continuing the tough job of bringing 4G to rural regions, with the Aberdeenshire village of Braemar next in line, following recent work in Barton-upon-Humber, Whitehead and Clehonger.
The network plans to begin the upgrade work in Braemar on Monday September 19th, and as well as bringing 4G to its customers in the Deeside community the improvements will also boost 2G and 3G performance in the area.
Speaking to The Press and Journal, Derek McManus, chief operating officer of Telefónica UK, said: “O2 customers in Braemar will soon be able to experience faster mobile internet on their devices such as streaming high-definition TV, shopping on the go, and video calling.
“For our business customers, 4G is all about working more effectively. They can work remotely, access cloud services, collaborate using apps and so on. 4G will make everything easier for them.”
The work is set to be completed in the next few weeks, at which point 4G will be available, but while the upgrade work is being carried out O2 customers may experience intermittent service.
Looking slightly further ahead, The Hinckley Times reports that O2 has requested permission to build a new mast, which if approved would improve 4G coverage in the Newbold Verdon and Osbaston areas.
Given that the proposed site for the mast is well away from residential properties and isn’t expected to obstruct views it sounds like O2 has a good chance of getting it approved, so hopefully customers in the area will have a better 4G experience soon.
Braemar is likely to welcome O2 4G, especially as no other network currently offers 4G in the village – though Vodafone has upgrade works planned in the area soon. Newbold Verdon and Osbaston meanwhile have some 4G coverage from EE, Three and Vodafone, but there are a number of blackspots.
