The Rise of LTE
![]() |
In 2011, expenditure on LTE enhanced equipment is expected to increase dramatically. According to ABI Research, it is set to reach $1 billion, growing at 120% during 2011. 185 trials and deployments worldwide support the expected increase. Practice director Aditya Kaul said that social networkers and consumers interested in media-rich technology, as well corporate users who need faster data connections, indicate to the mobile network operators that 4G LTE services are now appropriate for the market.
4G services' more aggressive rollout is now occurring in the US because it is there that it is needed to underpin enterprise and consumer services related to 4G, despite Europe having hosted the first commercial LTE launches. MetroPCS has committed itself to the introduction in 2011 of at least six Android LTE smartphones, and Verizon is planning on ten by the middle of the year. LTE plans are being brought forward by T-Mobile and AT&T.
Jake Saunders, VP for forecasting, says that 3G upgrades mostly dominate the deployment market for wireless infrastructure, despite all the rhetoric and hype surrounding 4G wireless, and that even 2G coverage buildouts and swap-outs account for a big chunk of the market. The coverage of existing areas in China for example has been subjected to a push for improved quality and coverage by China Mobile using TD-SCDMA equipment, and the company has spent over $22 billion to date on this. China has also been trialling TD-LTE extensively in cities such as Shanghai, as TD-LTE is increasingly becomes the recipient of spending on wireless infrastructures.
