Samsung Galaxy S4 – 8 core mobile processor

14th January 2013
Exynos 5This is the third significant mobile processor announcement that came out of CES last week. Firstly, came the Nvidia Tegra 4, then the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and now we have the 8 core Exynos 5 Octa mobile processor.

The first 8 core mobile processor - heading for the Samsung Galaxy S4 ?

The 8 core Exynos 5 Octa is the first 8 core processor ever to be featured in a mobile phone and although no-one has confirmed this, we fully expect the 8 core Exynos 5 Octa to first appear in the Samsung Galaxy S4.   The Exynos 5 Octa is the successor to the Exynos 4 quad core processor that features in the majority of Samsung’s 3G and 4G mobile phones and tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note. The latest rumoured specification for the Samsung Galaxy S4 can be viewed by following the link.

8 core Exynos 5 Octa – how better is it ?

This is the first 8-core mobile processor chip whilst another first is that it is the first mobile processor to come with ARM’s big.LITTLE processing technology. The new Exynos 5 Octa has up to 70% better power efficiency than the current quad-core Exynos 4. The 8 core Exynos 5 Octa is thought to be offered with a clock speed of 1.8GHz and although the GPU ( Graphic Processor Unit ) was not identified, it was stated that it will offer major graphical performance beyond the Exynos 4 and this could mean the GPU is a ARM Mali-T604 quad-core GPU.

8 core Exynos 5 Octa – what next ?

Nothing has been confirmed. We are not sure if the 8 core Exynos 5 Octa is at the sampling stage of manufacturing or whether its been completed. However, we will watch out for more details and any more news on whether the 8 core Exynos 5 Octa will in fact be shipped in the Samsung Galaxy S4 or not.
