4G Phones – Increased Battery Life Breakthrough

8th November 2012

4G phones and 4G tablets suffer from higher battery life drainage as they need to switch between 4G, 3G and possibly 2G signals when not having a 4G connection. In addition, because 4G phones currently DO NOT use the intended VoLTE technology for voice calls, the 4G phones and tablets have to switch between 4G and 3G for every phone call made on a 4G phone.

On top of these two current issues, 4G phones demand higher battery consumption as they are designed to run at greater processing speeds, with better graphics, better displays etc. and these improvements all need more battery power.

These three facts mean that 4G phone batteries can drain away quicker than they were designed to and each new way to save battery consumption is always welcome.

New integrated capacitor technology from STMicroelectronics may help alleviate some of these issues by optimising the 4G phone antenna’s performance. It’s all about improving efficiency in the transfer of energy from the phone’s amplifier to the phone’s antenna ( aerial ).

The new ParaScan Tunable Integrated Capacitors ( STPTIC ) are adjustable to get maximum 4G signal for better voice calling and at the same time reduces battery consumption to a minimum. On top of this they are actually smaller than the capacitors currently used in 4G phones.

“Our latest and most advanced STPTIC family now delivers an even more compelling option for future 4G LTE handsets, which will demand high wireless performance for reliable voice and high-speed data communications with longer battery life” said Ricardo De-Sa-Earp, Group VP and General Manager, Application-Specific Discretes & IPAD Division. “Two of the world’s top five handset manufacturers have already chosen this technology for antenna matching in their current handsets.”

The STPTIC range is currently being sampled and may be seen in 4G phones in the first half of 2013. They can operate up to 2.7GHz which means that they will be suitable for any 4G phone which is aimed at the UK market.
