Hull has so far been rather unloved by mobile networks it seems. That’s not to say that 4G isn’t available there, as both EE and Vodafone have a live 4G service in the city, but in a recent report Hull was found to have some of the slowest mobile data speeds in the UK, at an average of just 6.5Mbps.
EE in particular has delivered subpar speeds compared to what’s expected, with the network blaming local broadband provider KC for the issue, according to the Hull Daily Mail, an accusation which KC refuted.
So it’s not clear what’s to blame for the disappointing speeds, but the good news is that residents of Hull may not have to suffer for much longer, as O2 is reportedly rolling out its own 4G service in the city.
It could be several months before the rollout is finalised, but it’s started already, with parts of Hull now enjoying 4G speeds and early reports are positive, with users telling the Hull Daily Mail that O2’s speeds are “much-improved”.
Hopefully once it’s got a city-wide rollout O2 won’t suffer the same complaints as EE. But bringing 4G to Hull isn’t the only thing O2 has been up to of late, with the company also expanding its 4G network rapidly across other parts of the UK.
Plus the network is providing added value to subscribers with a new initiative bringing 10 Channel 4 and E4 shows to customers 48 hours before they air. These include Made in Chelsea, Fresh Meat, Peep Show, First Dates, Gadget Man, Friday Night Dinner and My Mad Fat Diary and they will be available through O2 Priority.
EE may be the 4G leader then, but if you’re a TV addict or live in Hull O2 could be a smarter choice.
